I love taking pictures of my kids – so much so that this year I’m doing Project 365 with the hope of capturing moments from our life every day as well as improving my photography skills. The majority of my photo’s are of the kids – I have the camera with me and I’m at home with one or both of them everyday (well not necessarily at home) so here are my top tips for taking pictures of kids
Top 5 tips for taking pictures of kids
- Capture the ordinary moments – like sitting at the dinner table eating lunch, adjust your camera’s settings – even the most basic of point and shoot camera will allow you to change some things in the manual modes, if you can first adjust the ISO – the higher the number the better – my camera will only go to 400 iso but this means that pictures that I’m taking inside are needing the use of flash less and less.

- Use the rule of thirds – ekkkk maybe the photography course that I took when I was in my early 20′s is coming back, but this is easy the rule of thirds is basically you view is divided into a 3 x 3 box, thirds across and thirds down use these to your advantage – things don’t have to be dead center, they can be to the side capturing a bit of what is going on around the outside of the pictures as well.

- Take LOTS of pictures – I must take almost 100 pictures a day, my camera or phone are near us where ever we go. I walk to pre-school with a camera in my pocket so I can capture any moments that happen on the way as with kids you never know what will happen but and this is the big but I also take pictures that don’t work – they are blury my kids are pulling odd faces they are looking the wrong way.
Zulily my favourite online site to shop for kids with super discounts on kids clothes, toys, home accessories and stuff for me (up to 90% off don’t you know) and I’m forever buying from them. Each month I admire the cuties competition run on Instagram, but I don’t have instagram (my phone is a through back to the stone age) but now they are giving me a chance to enter as a blogger sharing my top 3 tips for taking pictures of kids so get your cameras out and start snapping. Just remember to back them up every once in a while as well.
